2017 Squalicum Storm Preveiw

Coach: Nick Lucey, 4th season with Squalicum (30-5)

Home Field: Civic Stadium

Last Season: 10-1 (7-0 WesCo North)

Key Losses: WR/DB/KR Ben Peterson; WR/DB Damek Mitchell; TE/LB Jake Burns; QB Garrett Sorenson; LB Jack Wendling; OL/DL Justin McAuley; WR/DB Noah Westerhoff.

Top Returnees: OL/DL Kollin Johnson; RB/DB Triston Smith; QB/LB Spencer Lloyd; LB Brian Pullman.

  1. Kollin Johnson – Left Guard/Nose Tackle

After being named All-League 1st Team on both lines last season, what does he have for an encore? I’m guessing All-State for the 6-foot-5 260-pound stud.

2. Triston Smith – Running Back/Cornerback

An unbelievable talent, and in my opinion the most explosive back in Whatcom County. A threat to score every time he touches the ball, as evident by averaging 11 yards per carry last season!

3. Spencer Lloyd – Quarterback/Outside Linebacker

The junior takes over at quarterback for the departed Sorenson. And not unlike Garrett, he will be able to beat you with his arm or his legs. He’s also a plus defender at outside linebacker.

4. Brian Pullman – Tight End/Outside Linebacker

Gone is Jake Burns, but in steps Brian Pullman. Big shoes to fill, but the muscular Pullman will be all over the field making plays for the Storm.

Fastest Players: Triston Smith, Devante Powell, Jose Hernandez and Brandon Powers.

Strongest Players: Brian Pullman, Kollin Johnson, Dominick Mack, Josh Jacobsen and Triston Smith.

Smartest Players: Spencer Lloyd, Will Russell and Alex Everett.

Who will be Squalicum’s breakout player?

Jose Hernandez – Wide Receiver/Cornerback

Now a senior, Hernandez has been waiting for his time to shine. Those teams down south will learn who he is really quickly, on both sides of the ball.

This will be the 20th season of Squalicum football. Even though the school is still relatively new in comparison to the rest of the county, it is loaded with talent. Coach Nick Lucey knows how to mold individuals into a cohesive talent machine, as evident in his 30 wins to just five losses in his first three years as head coach.

“We have a blended crew this year,” Lucey said. “We have some experience mixed with some guys that are cutting their teeth.” Last year was the first season that Squalicum played in the 3A WesCo North, and despite being the smallest school, it took the rest of the league by “Storm” going undefeated. This year could be different, after graduating a ton of talent.

Junior Spencer Lloyd steps in at quarterback, and Lucey likes what he sees. “He has the intangibles,” the 4th year coach said. “He lives, breathes and eats football.” Lloyd completed 5-of-7 passes last season in limited time.

Triston Smith returns for his senior season after tearing up the league last year. He rushed for 1352 yards (11.0 average!) and 18 touchdowns, and was named All-League 1st Team. He’s being pushed by an eager pair of sophomores; Brandon Powers and Collin McEachran. Senior Brian Pullman will have a true physical presence as the roaming fullback, and if he can catch a few passes that will be a bonus.

Speaking of catching passes, the receiving corps could be the toughest to replace, but the Storm have talented pieces to fill the holes left behind by last year’s seniors. Jose Hernandez could have a breakout season in Squalicum’s pass-happy offense. Fellow senior Devante Powell will line up in the slot, and sophomore Ja’Lique Martin has shown glimpses of brilliance in practice. Senior Justin Hulbert and junior Zach Tucker should also see plenty of playing time at wide out.

Seniors Kollin Johnson (left guard) and Josh Jacobsen (left tackle) are returning starters, and give the Storm O-Line a solid foundation. Junior right guard Dominick Mack also gained value experience last season. Senior center Jasen Barber and sophomore right tackle Brandon Gimse round out the offensive line that averages 256 pounds per player, from tackle to tackle. Seniors Trenton Creelman and Will Russell provide depth.

The defensive line will be led by Johnson as nose tackle, and he will be flanked by a pair of really quick defensive tackles in McEachran and senior Carsden Dvorachek. Pullman and Lloyd will contain the edges as defensive end/outside linebacker-type players, and sophomore Schuyler Alton could see some time on the edge as well. Russell and Powers seem to have the inside linebacker positions locked down. Smith returns at one of the cornerback positions, and Hernandez will start on the other side. Powell and Tucker round out the secondary at the safety positions.

Senior Alex Everett got valuable playing time last season, booting 18 extra points, and he will take over the full kicking and punting duties. Smith, Powell and Martin should be the main return men for the Storm.

It was a special graduating class that Squalicum had in June, and those players will be deeply missed. But, since Coach Lucey has taken the reigns of this team, the Storm have been one of the most unstoppable forces on Friday night. I would imagine there won’t be a lot of change in that regard.
