The 2000 Mariners were coming off one of their best seasons in school history, and started the season strong with seven straight wins. However, they finished the season with three straight losses, and just missed the 4A State Playoffs.
Junior quarterback James Monrean took over for Paul Nicholes who had graduated. Although Monrean didn’t have the same kind of speed that Nicholes boasted, he had an amazingly strong arm. He completed 41 passes for 511 yards and seven touchdowns. He was joined in the backfield by an amazing pair of senior running backs. Mike McEvoy steamrolled through opposing defenders, as the 6-foot-1 230-pounder ran for 1458 yards (7.2 average) and 13 touchdowns on his way to being named All-League 1st Team. He was joined by the shifty 195-pound halfback, Andrew Holloway, who ran for 716 yards (5.9) and 11 touchdowns. He would be named All-League Honorable Mention.
Throughout the decade of the 90’s, Sehome produced a lot of top-end talent tight ends. It would continue in 2000 with 6-foot-5 235-pound senior, Brad Rhoades. He led the Mariners with 15 catches for 202 yards (13.5) and three touchdowns, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Senior receiver Bryan Whitlock caught nine passes for 142 yards (15.8) and a pair of scores. Senior Cory Brock and junior Josh McBride each caught a touchdown pass.
The offensive line was a sight to behold, especially the left side, that featured a pair of three-year starters. Senior left tackle Matt Chalfant (6-6 295) and senior left guard Mike Reed (6-0 265) were each named All-League 1st Team. Senior Andy Tsiorvas (5-11 210) started at right guard, and was named All-League Honorable Mention. The Mariners ran the ball over 400 times, averaging 6.1 yards per rush and 25 touchdowns.
The defensive line was anchored by Reed and Rhoades, who were each named All-League 1st Team. Rhoades intercepted a pass against Mariner, and brought it back 42 yards for a touchdown. Seniors Beau Robey (6-1 295) and Josh Davis (6-1 245) supplied ample size and strength, and were each named All-League Honorable Mention on the D-Line. The linebacking corps was led by one of the best linebackers in Whatcom County history. McEvoy had amazing instincts, size, speed and tackling ability, and he was an obvious choice for All-League 1st Team. He was joined by Holloway (All-League 2nd Team) and Tsiorvas (All-League Honorable Mention). Whitlock headed up the secondary, and was named All-League Honorable Mention.
Senior Andrew Andersen kicked 20 extra points and his five field goals kicked led the entire county.
