The 1982 version of the Red Raiders made history as the first time the Bellingham football team reached the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

Senior Brian Dujmovich started the season at quarterback, but was replaced by sophomore Dean Fenton two games into the season. Fenton completed 88 passes for 952 yards and nine touchdowns. Before Dujmovich’s move to running back he completed 17 passes for 183 yards and a score. Fenton also ran for a pair of TD’s.

Mike Elsner

Dujmovich found his calling at running back, and used his speed and size (6-2 190) to rush for 512 yards (4.8 average) and three touchdowns, and he was named All-League 2nd Team. Junior All Hillaire contributed with 383 yards on the ground (4.0) and four touchdowns.

Steve Alvord

In the Red Raiders run and shoot offense of the early 80’s, passing was on display. Hauling in the majority of those passes was senior Mike Elsner. He was named All-League 1st Team for the second year in a row, catching 33 passes for 463 yards (14.0) and a team-high five touchdowns. Junior Tim Carlson hauled in 26 passes for 245 yards (9.4) and two scores. Dujmovich caught 19 passes out of the backfield for 168 yards (8.8), with Hillaire and senior Tom Erickson each catching seven passes.

Todd Ramsay

The offensive line was stacked with seniors Steve Alvord and Todd Ramsay completely dominating their opponents. Both were named All-League 1st Team, and Alvord was voted as the Washington State Lineman of the Year.

Alvord was even more dominant on the defensive side of the ball with numerous tackles for loss, and even returning an interception 35 yards for a touchdown against Vancouver College. He was named All-League 1st Team, the Northwest League Defensive Player of the Year and All-State 1st Team, and his highly regarded as the best player in school history. Senior Barry Ebergson was also named All-League 1st Team at defensive end, with senior Steve Hempler being named All-League 2nd Team as the other defensive end. Senior Roger Jones was named All-League 2nd Team at linebacker, and Elsner led the secondary, being named All-League 1st Team for the second season in a row.

Senior Tony Frazier made big kicks, connecting on 14 extra points and two field goals. Dumjovich was named All-League 1st Team at punter.

Even though the 1982 Trojans didn’t make the playoffs, they began that push that would evolve into next season’s team. They had a great senior class, and they had some very strong underclassmen beginning to make their mark.

Shawn Scott
Shawn Scott

Sophomore Shawn Scott was under center during the season, but wasn’t asked to throw a whole lot. He completed 12 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 170 yards (5.0 average) and a pair of scores. He had one of the greatest pair of senior running backs that Whatcom County saw in the 1980’s, and he gave them the rock over 120 times each. Brian Martinson led the entire county in rushing, and combined amazing strength and speed. He was named All-League 1st Team and had 956 yards (7.5 average) and 11 touchdowns. He ran for 343 yards against Blaine, and still stands as the school record. Duffy Cox is widely regarded as one of the greatest Trojans of all-time. He was named All-League 2nd Team and ran for 851 yards (6.9) and 12 touchdowns. Junior Kurt Rick added 183 yards (4.7) on the ground.

Junior tight end Rob Aswegan led Meridian in receiving with nine catches for 243 yards. He joined senior center Brian Ruese, junior guard Travis Welch and senior tackle Don Gorsenger to form an amazing offensive line. All three players were named All-League 1st Team, and it was the third season in a row for Welch. The line paved the way for 2387 yards rushing and 26 rushing touchdowns.

On defense, Welch became Meridian’s first ever underclassman to be named All-State. He forced every team to run away from his defensive end spot. He would occasionally drop back in coverage, and he intercepted a pass against Mount Baker and brought it back for a touchdown. He was named All-League 1st Team on the defensive line, as was fellow junior Terry Martinson. Brian Martinson was an All-League 2nd Team selection as a nose guard. Cox was named All-League 1st Team at linebacker for the second year in a row, and at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he did more that just stand out. Senior Chris Haugen was named All-League 1st Team at defensive back, and led the team with seven interceptions. Rick was an All-League 2nd Teamer, and he intercepted a pass. Scott and Aswegan each intercepted two passes.

Brian Martinson was the kicker, and he hit 17 extra points and a field goal. He also returned eight kickoffs for 207 yards (25.9) and one touchdown. Cox also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

The 1982 Mountaineers were coming off their first state playoff appearance, and with some key players returning, they were hoping to make the playoffs once again.

Senior Jay Compton took over at quarterback in 1982, and he completed 23 passes for 405 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown, but his main objective was to hand the ball off to the Whatcom County League Offensive Player of the Year, Kelly Zender. The senior ran for 916 yards (4.7 average) and eight touchdowns, and he led the team with seven catches for 105 yards (15.0) and a score. Senior Kevin Cronk also had a great season, rushing for 532 yards (5.4) and five touchdowns, along with six receptions for 112 yards (18.7), and he was named All-League 2nd Team. Junior Brett Engholm added 137 yards rushing.

Running backs Zender and Cronk were the team’s leading receivers. Senior Fred Knebel and junior Eric Jacoby each caught a pair of touchdown passes.

Shannon Franks was the leader of the offensive line, and the junior was named All-League 1st Team. He was joined on the line by senior three-year starter Kevin Allen, as well as a pair of big juniors Mark Silves (6-3 200) and Stacy Zudell (5-9 212).

The defense was led by Zender, who was named the League’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1981. He was named All-League 1st Team along with Zudell on the defensive line. All-League 2nd Teamers included Silves on the defensive line, Cronk at linebacker, as well as Compton and Knebel at defensive back.

Senior Corey Webb was named All-League 1st Team at kicker, hitting 11 extra points, and he tied for the county lead with three field goals. One of his field goals was from 37 yards out, and stood as the school record for over 25 years. Zender returned kickoffs and Cronk was the punt returner.
