It was the first time in five years that the Mount Baker football team’s head coach would return for another season, and it did wonders. Doug Preston had a talented group of seniors to work with, along with some strong underclassmen that were ready to show what they could do.

Seniors Lance Zamzow and Tom Horsmon split time at quarterback in 1993, helping lead the Mountaineers to their first postseason berth in seven years. The decision was made to use Zamzow’s speed on the outside as a wide receiver, and Horsmon would be the starting quarterback. That lasted one week into the season. Coach Doug Preston needed another talented receiver to take the pressure off of Zamzow, and the decision was made to move Horsmon outside, and insert junior David Galbraith behind center. It worked.

David Galbraith

Galbraith had a huge game at Steilacoom, and the Mounties never looked back. He finished the season completing 72 passes for 1183 yards and 14 touchdowns, to only five interceptions. He also ran for 390 yards (5.8 average) and two touchdowns on his way to being named All-League 2nd Team.

Scott McKeever

Seniors Scott McKeever and Galen Smith shared the workload at tailback in the I-Formation offense that Baker ran in 1994. McKeever led the Mounties in rushing for the third straight season (the only player to do that in school history). He ran for 665 yards (6.0) and six touchdowns, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Smith totaled 498 yards (6.1) and also ran for six touchdowns. He was named All-League 2nd Team. Senior fullback Lee Stavik ran for 153 yards (6.4) and scored a pair of TD’s.

Lance Zamzow

Coming into the season, Baker didn’t have any receivers with varsity experience. Mike Perez transferred to Nooksack Valley, and former quarterbacks Zamzow and Horsmon were now the wide receivers. Zamzow brought amazing speed and play-making ability, while Hormson had size (6’4″) and terrific hands. Zamzow caught 22 passes for 477 yards (21.7) and six touchdowns, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Horsmon led the team with 38 receptions for 581 yards (15.3) and six scores, and he was named All-League 2nd Team. Junior tight end Chris Rainwater was also a pleasant surprise, catching 13 passes for 151 yards (11.6) and two touchdowns, and he was also named All-League 1st Team.

Travis Brouwer

The offensive line was a consistent strength. Full of seniors, left tackle to right tackle, they led up front for Mount Baker’s balanced attack. Right tackle Karl Frombly (6-0 257) and right guard Jacob Cecka (6-4 241) were each named All-League 1st Team. While left tackle Dan Butenschoen (6-4 219), left guard Travis Brouwer (6-0 170) and center Jeremy Zender (5-11 225) were all named All-League Honorable Mention.

Karl Frombly

The defensive line was led by Frombly, who was named All-State 1st Team at defensive tackle. He had 70 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks and he scored a touchdown on a fumble return. Galbraith was a rock at defensive end, with 103 tackles (59 solo), 14 tackles for loss, eight sacks while knocking down four passes, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Fellow junior Pete Malec held down the other side at defensive end, with 42 tackles and eight tackles for loss.

Galen Smith

Stavik was named All-League 1st Team at inside linebacker, and he had 99 tackles (66 solo) and 10 tackles for loss. Smith was also in on 103 tackles and was named All-League 2nd Team at linebacker. Rainwater played as an outside linebacker/strong safety and was in on many big plays, scoring three touchdowns on defense, and was named All-League 1st Team.

Chris Rainwater

Horsmon led the secondary from his free safety position. He intercepted nine passes and had 82 tackles, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Zamzow intercepted four passes from his cornerback spot, and was named All-League Honorable Mention.

Tom Horsmon

Junior Travis Weeks was named All-League Honorable Mention at kicker, hitting on 27 extra points and a field goal. Zamzow handled the punting duties. McKeever returned kickoffs, including a touchdown return against Cedarcrest in the state playoffs, and he finished his career with over 1000 kickoff return yards. Zamzow was a dangerous punt returner, with two touchdown returns, and a third that was called back.

The 1994 Golden Eagles went through a massive transformation from the previous season. In 1993, Ferndale went winless, and although Vic Randall was returning after a four year absence, nobody (outside of the 98264 zip code) could have predicted the turnaround that would happen in 1994.

Ash Perrin

The pass-happy Golden Eagles of the early 1990’s went back to the ground attack in 1994, and leading it was the superbly athletic senior quarterback, Craig Willis. He completed 14 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 530 yards (6.5 average), seven touchdowns, and he was named All-League Honorable Mention. He handed off to one of the most talented backs of the decade, junior Ash Perrin. He ran for 1182 yards (7.2) and 11 touchdowns, and he was an All-League 1st Team selection. Senior Damon Fitzgibbon added 306 yards on the ground, and junior Marshall Udo contributed with 201 yards rushing.

Pat Humphrey
Pat Humphrey

Ferndale only attempted 3.3 passes per game in ’94, but they relied on junior Chris Cantrelle to make the big plays. He caught five passes for 145 yards (29.0) and a touchdown. Udo also caught three passes for 74 yards (24.7).

Ken Arnold
Ken Arnold

The offensive line was one of the biggest improvements for the Golden Eagles, and it had a great one in senior Pat Humphrey. At 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, he dominated the rest of the league, and he was not only All-League 1st Team, but was chosen as an All-State 1st Teamer. He was joined by fellow senior Colby Haugness (6-1 210). Haugness was also named All-League 1st Team. Junior tight end Travis LaFave was an All-League Honorable Mention selection. The offensive line led the way for 2768 yards on the ground and 27 rushing touchdowns.

The defense had many standouts at each level. The defensive line was led by Humphrey and 6-foot-5 junior, Isaac Williams. They were each named All-League 1st Team. They were joined up front by junior defensive end, Scott Farrar, who was named All-League Honorable Mention. Junior Ken Arnold led the linebacking corps, and was named All-League 1st Team. He also returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown against Mount Vernon. As stout as the Golden Eagles were in the front seven, the defensive backfield was a major strength. Senior Deer Creek legend Jeff Segel was a brilliant cover-cornerback. He intercepted five passes, knocked down countless others and he was named All-League 1st Team. Willis was all over the field and was an All-League 2nd Team pick.

Arnold handled the kicking duties, with 21 extra points and one field goal, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Willis also had a great leg, and was named All-League 1st Team. Junior Taylor Rohrbach returned the kickoffs, and Udo returned the punts, including an 85-yarder for a touchdown against Lynwood.

The 1994 Lions were in just their second year of the Northwest League, and they showed the “big boys” that they can play with anyone, becoming the league champion.

Matt Wall
Matt Wall

The Lions had a decision to make at quarterback. Senior Andy Jones had proved to be valuable at the position the previous two years, but the Lions needed Jones’ athleticism at other offensive positions, and that opened the door for junior signal caller, Matt Wall. Wall completed 38 passes for 650 yards and five touchdowns, while rushing for 154 yards and three more scores. When he wasn’t chuckin’ the rock he was handing it to his brother, senior, Ben Wall. Ben carried the ball 212 times for 1414 yards (6.7 average) and 18 touchdowns. He was named All-League 1st Team, as well as All-State 2nd Team and ended his career as the school’s All-Time leading rusher, surpassing the speedy Scott Noteboom. A great deal of Wall’s running lanes were cleared by his senior fullback, Andy Hanson. He finished with 458 yards on the ground (5.7), three touchdowns and was named All-League 2nd Team. Fleet-footed senior Eric In added 195 yards rushing (4.8) and one touchdown.

Ben Wall

Mostly using a double-tight end look on offense, both ends had great receiving seasons. Senior Rob Van Diest led the team in receiving with 14 catches for 285 yards (20.4), three touchdowns (including an overtime game-winner in week one), and he was named All-League Honorable Mention. Senior Turner Stiers was the other tight end, catching 11 passes for 197 yards (17.9) and one touchdown. Jones was used as both a wingback and a wide receiver, and he hauled in seven passes for 156 yards (22.3).

Chris Polinder
Chris Polinder

The offensive line did very well, and had two promising underclassmen. The first was super sophomore, Chris Polinder. He was the only Lion o-lineman to be named All-League 1st Team, and he was recognized state-wide, being named All-State 2nd Team. Junior Trevor Kleindel used great size (6-0 250) and strength, and he was named All-League 2nd Team. The entire line paved the way for over 2500 yards on the ground to go with 28 touchdowns.

Andy Hanson
Andy Hanson

The defensive line got into the opposing backfield may times, and it was led by three seniors: Jed Hougan, Chuck Millsap and Dante Attolini. Hougan had huge numbers from his defensive end spot, leading the team with 14 QB’s harassed, nine sacks and eight tackles for loss. The other end was Millsap, and he totaled 56.5 tackles, four tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. Attolini was in the middle of the line, and at 265 pounds was a huge load to block. He ended with 34 tackles and six tackles for a loss. All three players were named All-League 2nd Team.

John Hilt
John Hilt

Senior Ben Hardman was stout at middle linebacker, and was named All-League Honorable Mention. He led the team with 83.5 total tackles. He also had five tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and three pass deflections. Junior outside linebacker John Hilt was all over the field. It was actually hard to put a defensive position on him, but he was named All-League 1st Team at linebacker. He finished with 61 total tackles, seven sacks, five tackles for loss, seven pass deflections, two forced fumbles and an interception.

Rob Van Diest
Rob Van Diest

Lynden’s strength on defense looked to be it’s secondary. Van Diest and Jones were each named All-League 1st Team, with Van Diest also being named All-State 2nd Team. Jones had three interceptions and seven pass deflections while Van Diest finished with five interceptions and 61 total tackles. Ben Wall also had a great year on defense, tying for a team-high five interceptions. He also had 65 total tackles and a sack.

Andy Jones

Jones handled the kicking duties, punching in 17 extra points and two field goals. Hanson averaged 32.3 yards per punt. Ben Wall returned punts while he, along with Jones and In, returned kickoffs.

The 1994 Mariners were coming off the most successful team in school history, and their confidence was riding high. Replacing players like Josh Smith and Evan Ayers on the line would be tough, but they were returning a lot of skilled players.

Senior quarterback Ryan Binning was as skilled a passer as their was in Whatcom County. He connected on 61-of-129 passes for 752 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior running back Alex Brown was a scoring machine, carrying the ball 108 times for 784 yards (7.3 average) and 15 touchdowns, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Fellow seniors Todd Zuehlke and Aber Whitcomb each scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground, and had 404 yards and 319 yards respectively.

Senior wide receiver Bob Van Kolken led Sehome in receiving with 26 catches for 352 yards (13.5) and four touchdowns. Junior Sean Ryan also caught two touchdown passes.

Seniors Dominic Papetti and Sean Stimac led the Mariners up front on the offensive line. Papetti was named All-League 2nd Team and Sehome averaged 6.3 yards per rush while scoring 24 rushing touchdowns.

Hale led the defensive push from his defensive line position, and he was named All-League 1st Team. Senior Tory Pazaski and sophomore Lee Eckl were all over the field at linebacker, and Pazaski was named All-League 2nd Team. Juniors Kenny Dorr and Paul Lockhart excelled in the secondary, and Dorr was named All-League 2nd Team.

Senior Alex Brown handled the kicking duties. He connected on 13 extra points and one field goal. He was also named All-League 2nd Team at punter.
