The 2009 version of the Borderites were explosive. They scored at least three touchdowns in every game they played, except the one against Lynden when they scored two touchdowns. They could beat you in the air, and they could beat you on the ground. The defense also recorded four shutouts during the season, proving that this was one of the best Blaine football teams of all-time.
Senior quarterback Jordan McCarty threw the ball all over the field, completing 139 passes for 1671 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also scored a touchdown on the ground and was named All-League 2nd Team. He graduated as one of the top passers in school history.
I’ve been asked a few times, “Who is the fastest player you’ve ever seen in Whatcom County history?” I never have just one answer. Usually about five names come to mind, and one of them is Caleb Statham. If the senior running back broke loose, he was gone. He had a tremendous season, rushing for 1488 yards (8.2 average) and 21 touchdowns. He was named both All-League 1st Team as well as All-State 1st Team. Senior David Craig contributed with 235 yards rushing (6.0) and three touchdowns.
Three-year starter wide receiver Trevor Chau had a great senior year, catching 54 passes for 791 yards (14.6) and seven touchdowns. He graduated as the school’s all-time leading receiver, and was named All-League 1st Team and All-State 2nd Team. He was joined on the outside by junior Todd Bird. He caught 39 passes for 423 yards (10.8) and five touchdowns, and he was named All-League Honorable Mention. 190-pound senior tight end Al Bohnson caught 17 passes for 234 yards (13.8) and four touchdowns, and he was an All-League 2nd Team selection. It was a tremendous trio of pass catchers for McCarty.
The offensive line was well rounded, and could run block just as well as it could pass protect, as the Borderites ran for over 2000 yards and passed for over 1700 yards on the season. Senior Travis Pederson (6-3 262) led the way up front, and was named All-League 1st Team. Senior Joel Garza (5-10 225) combined quick feet with tremendous strength, and was named All-League 2nd Team. Seniors Anthony Munden (6-1 215) and Christian Wood (6-0 245) were each named All-League Honorable Mention.
Blaine had a huge senior class, which meant that most players didn’t have to star on both sides of the ball. That allowed the defensive line to be fresh with big bodies. Senior Brandon Heggem (6-0 215) led the charge and was named All-League 1st Team. He was joined on the line by seniors Chris Nunez (5-6 190) and Brad Johnson (6-1 190) who were both named All-League Honorable Mention.
The linebacking corps was extremely talented, and it was led by Garza, who was named All-League 1st Team. He was joined by seniors Tusapa Laolagi (6-0 190), who was named All-League 2nd Team and scored a defensive touchdown against Anacortes, Shaffer Hicks (6-0 200) and Bohnson, who were each named All-League Honorable Mention.
Craig led the secondary, and was named All-League 1st Team as well as All-State 2nd Team. He was joined by fellow senior Tucker Morgan, who was named All-League 2nd Team. Morgan also served as the punter, and was named All-League Honorable Mention, while senior kicker Keith Sentkowski was also an All-League Honorable Mention selection, nailing 34 extra points and one field goal.
