The 2009 version of the Borderites were explosive. They scored at least three touchdowns in every game they played, except the one against Lynden when they scored two touchdowns. They could beat you in the air, and they could beat you on the ground. The defense also recorded four shutouts during the season, proving that this was one of the best Blaine football teams of all-time.

Jordan McCarty

Senior quarterback Jordan McCarty threw the ball all over the field, completing 139 passes for 1671 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also scored a touchdown on the ground and was named All-League 2nd Team. He graduated as one of the top passers in school history.

Caleb Statham

I’ve been asked a few times, “Who is the fastest player you’ve ever seen in Whatcom County history?” I never have just one answer. Usually about five names come to mind, and one of them is Caleb Statham. If the senior running back broke loose, he was gone. He had a tremendous season, rushing for 1488 yards (8.2 average) and 21 touchdowns. He was named both All-League 1st Team as well as All-State 1st Team. Senior David Craig contributed with 235 yards rushing (6.0) and three touchdowns.

Trevor Chau

Three-year starter wide receiver Trevor Chau had a great senior year, catching 54 passes for 791 yards (14.6) and seven touchdowns. He graduated as the school’s all-time leading receiver, and was named All-League 1st Team and All-State 2nd Team. He was joined on the outside by junior Todd Bird. He caught 39 passes for 423 yards (10.8) and five touchdowns, and he was named All-League Honorable Mention. 190-pound senior tight end Al Bohnson caught 17 passes for 234 yards (13.8) and four touchdowns, and he was an All-League 2nd Team selection. It was a tremendous trio of pass catchers for McCarty.

Travis Pederson

The offensive line was well rounded, and could run block just as well as it could pass protect, as the Borderites ran for over 2000 yards and passed for over 1700 yards on the season. Senior Travis Pederson (6-3 262) led the way up front, and was named All-League 1st Team. Senior Joel Garza (5-10 225) combined quick feet with tremendous strength, and was named All-League 2nd Team. Seniors Anthony Munden (6-1 215) and Christian Wood (6-0 245) were each named All-League Honorable Mention.

Joel Garza

Blaine had a huge senior class, which meant that most players didn’t have to star on both sides of the ball. That allowed the defensive line to be fresh with big bodies. Senior Brandon Heggem (6-0 215) led the charge and was named All-League 1st Team. He was joined on the line by seniors Chris Nunez (5-6 190) and Brad Johnson (6-1 190) who were both named All-League Honorable Mention.

David Craig

The linebacking corps was extremely talented, and it was led by Garza, who was named All-League 1st Team. He was joined by seniors Tusapa Laolagi (6-0 190), who was named All-League 2nd Team and scored a defensive touchdown against Anacortes, Shaffer Hicks (6-0 200) and Bohnson, who were each named All-League Honorable Mention.

Keith Sentkowski

Craig led the secondary, and was named All-League 1st Team as well as All-State 2nd Team. He was joined by fellow senior Tucker Morgan, who was named All-League 2nd Team. Morgan also served as the punter, and was named All-League Honorable Mention, while senior kicker Keith Sentkowski was also an All-League Honorable Mention selection, nailing 34 extra points and one field goal.

It was one of the best teams in school history, with a great regular season and an unbelievable post season, the 2009 Pioneers will be a team that the residents of Everson, Nooksack and Sumas will be talking about for a while.

Tyler Perry

Junior quarterback Tyler Perry had one of the most impressive seasons in recent memory. He is still the only player in Whatcom County history to pass for over 2000 yards and rush for over 1000 yards in the same season, which he did in 2009. He completed 163 passes for 2037 yards and 15 touchdowns, while rushing for 1098 yards (5.6 average) and 20 touchdowns, and he was named All-League 2nd Team.

Nick deGrasse

Senior running back Nick DeGrasse was named All-League 1st Team for the second year in a row. He ran for 1125 yards (7.0) and 14 touchdowns, including a 37-carry, 239-yard, 4-touchdown performance against King’s in one of the biggest comeback wins in Washington State Playoff history.

Anthony Reese

Perry used many receivers in the Pioneer spread offense, but none more than senior Anthony Reese. Reese had rare athleticism, and finished with 58 catches for 914 yards (15.8) and 10 touchdowns, and he was named both All-League 1st Team and All-State 1st Team. 6-foot-4 junior Kyle Handy provided a large catch radius for Perry, and he had 38 receptions for 500 yards (13.2) and a touchdown. DeGrasse caught 15 passes for 250 yards (16.7) and two scores. Sophomore Trevon Myhre caught 17 passes for 205 yards (12.1) and two touchdowns, while rushing for 200 yards (4.5) and three touchdowns.

Jessie Salmonson

Seniors Jon Charroin and Jessie Salmonson were the leaders of the offensive line. Both were named All-League 1st Team, and were able to form the wall that protected the high-octane Pioneer offense. Sophomore B.J. Salmoson provided rare size and strength, and was named All-League 2nd Team, along with senior Devin Dykes. A rare occurrence, the offense totaled over 5000 yards and 60 touchdowns!

Jon Charroin

The Salmonson boys headed up the defensive line, with Jessie being named All-League 1st Team, and B.J. was All-League Honorable Mention. Dykes was also named All-League 1st Team up front, and fellow senior Josh Larson was an All-League 2nd Team selection. Charroin was moved from defensive end to linebacker, and had another spectacular season. He was in on 143 tackles, and had six fumble recoveries, five forced fumbles and three sacks. He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, and was All-State 1st Team. Senior Levi Stuit was stout at linebacker, and was named All-League 1st Team. Perry was named All-League 1st Team at defensive back for the second year in a row, and Reese was named All-League 2nd Team in the secondary.

BJ Salmonson

Senior Travis Benner made 35 extra points and one field goal. DeGrasse and Reese had huge years returning kickoffs and punts, respectively.

The 2009 Golden Eagles featured a lot of fresh faces, but the Ferndale tradition was still there. It was also the first time since 2002 that a Locker wasn’t lining up behind center.

Jake Frost
Jake Frost

Senior Bo Brudwick started the season at quarterback, and sophomore Jake Frost finished the season there. Both QB’s put up similar numbers, though. Brudwick completed 30 passes for 470 yards and three touchdowns, while Frost completed 25 passes for 480 yards and five touchdowns. Ironically, it had been three years since Ferndale had a 1000-yard rusher, but they had one in 2009. junior Willy Scott was an All-League 2nd Team selection, and he had 1042 yards (9.1 average) and five touchdowns. Senior Brandon Maarhuis bulled his way for 564 yards on the ground (5.0) and a team-high 12 touchdowns. Senior Matt Reynolds added 410 yards rushing (6.7) and eight scores.

Willy Scott

Senior Jeff Frost had a great season at wide receiver, catching 27 passes for 434 yards (16.1) and two touchdowns. He was rewarded by being named All-League 2nd Team. Scott caught 16 passes for 301 yards (18.8) and three touchdowns. Reynolds caught a pair of touchdown passes, and senior tight end Isaac Akers also caught one.

Jeff Frost
Jeff Frost

The offensive line was led by senior Nick Morris. The 6-foot-1 190-pound former tight end was an All-League 2nd Team selection and helped pave the way for over 2400 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns on the ground.

Isaac Akers
Isaac Akers

Morris teamed with Akers to form a great defensive line. Morris was named All-League 2nd Team, and Akers was an All-League Honorable Mention pick. Maarhuis was the heart and soul of the defense from his linebacker spot, and was named All-League 1st Team. Jeff Frost was the only returning starter on defense, and led the secondary. Senior Benny Woodworth intercepted a pass against Squalicum and brought it back 32 yards for a touchdown.

Senior Jake Dunn finished off his great kicking career with a great season. He was an All-League Honorable Mention selection, with 39 extra points and three field goals.
